We're on quite the streak of Naruto mentor birthdays. Last week it was Tsunade, and this week we continue the parade with Yamato, who may be a relative latecomer to the Naruto storyline but certainly doesn't lack for background history or character development. Plus, as a goatee wearer myself, it's always gratifying to see an anime character rockin' it out with the face fuzz. And let's face it, we all need at least one person to serve as the calming influence in our lives, and amidst the young, inexperienced ninja, quirky and/or devious village leaders, and whacked-out villains that populate Naruto, Yamato is a soothing oasis of sanity. So celebrate the birthday of this most reliable fellow with a brand-spanking-new data wallpaper, contribute your birthday wishes in the discussion forum, and read on for our writer David F. Smith's tribute to the man who always seems to have a plan... --- It feels a little weird, throwing a birthday celebration for Yamato. He doesn’t really seem like the celebrating type. Sure, he’s one of the Leaf’s finest – a capable teacher, a strong leader, an extremely creative disciplinarian – but nobody’s ever going to mistake him for a party animal. From another perspective, though, that’s as good a reason for throwing a party as any. After spending however many of his younger days in Orochimaru’s genetic torture chambers [Shippuden Episode 39: "The Tenchi Bridge"], chances are Yamato could use some remedial birthday good wishes. When you think about it, by rights he should never have turned out to be such a stand-up guy. Yamato had a worse childhood than most of the bad guys in the Naruto canon, but do you ever see him whining, complaining, or kicking off some nihilistic global-domination campaign? (Sasori, Itachi, we’re glaring in your directions.) Instead, we have a man willing to put up with Naruto’s shenanigans – not to mention his occasional four-tailed flare-ups [Shippuden Episode 76: "The Next Step"]. This is a guy with almost inhuman patience. So here’s to another year of Yamato, and the only trouble’s figuring out what to do for a present. After all, what do you get for the guy who can build anything? -- David F. Smith The Kakashi Chronicles Is Here! And just a friendly reminder that the Kakashi Fan Art Contest is down to its final week -- all entries need to be postmarked by August 13, so get your submissions in! We've already received plenty of worthy entries, along with a few heartwarming letters and notes about what Naruto means to you. Happy Birthday, Tsunade! When a series focuses on young heroes, the adult figures tend to fade into the background -- usually they turn out to be stoic, wise teachers or root-of-all-evil baddies. Thank goodness, then, for a character like Tsunade, who is just as colorful, powerful and fascinating as any youngster in the Naruto universe. No doubt any mention of a birthday would elicit a scowl from the Fifth Hokage, as her standard regimen includes maintaining her "way younger than her age" looks, so be sure to wish her a happy birthday in the most respectful, flattering way possible. And in the meantime, check out our Tsunade character data wallpaper, and enjoy the following tribute... --- People call her Lady Tsunade because she’s related to the first and second Hokage, but she sure doesn’t act like it. You could put Sakura and Ino together and they’d have nothing on Tsunade when she gets her rage on. She’s got a serious talent for intimidation, but once you get past the yelling and criticizing, she’s actually a really good person, and a powerful ninja at that! Sure she acts tough, skimping on compliments and dishing out criticisms, but consider this: you can’t be a good medical ninja without a big heart, right? She takes Sakura under her wing, teaching her the ways of the ninja healer [Shippuden Episode 11: "The Medical Ninja's Student"], and even works her butt off to help Rock Lee get back to fighting status [Original Series Episode 100: "Sensei and Student: The Bond of the Shinobi"]. She’s totally your best bet for pulling shuriken out of your back and healing whatever crazy injuries you can get from the likes of Orochimaru and Akatsuki. She really does take care of her friends. Tsunade may be in her early fifties, but it looks like she walked straight out of a chapter of Make-Out Paradise. It’s pretty much impossible for any shinobi to guess her age, not that they would want to (maybe if they had a death wish?). Good thing she maintains her appearance without much trouble, although the wrinkles come faster than a slap to Jiraiya’s face if she loses all her chakra. Thankfully, she’s got her trusty summoning creature Katsuyu to aid with battlefield medicine [Original Series Episode 95: "The Fifth Hokage! A Life on the Line!"]. It might be strange to see a slimy talking slug crawling towards you, but it does put therapeutic leeches to shame. If you’re daring enough, try and charm Konoha’s resident grouchy granny by wishing her a happy birthday! Come on, we all know she’s smiling on the inside. -- Stephen Bajza Hot Topic: Shippuden Dubbed Episodes 1-4 This week's hot topic in our discussion boards is a no-brainer: What's your take on the dub?
